Tattoo Aftercare Instructions
Congratulations on your new tattoo! The tattoo process doesn't stop after you leave the studio, proper aftercare is essential to ensure that your tattoo heals well, looks vibrant, and stays infection-free. Follow these steps to make sure your tattoo heals properly:
1. After Samuel is done with your tattoo, a breathable film called Second Skin will be applied to your tattoo.
This will help with the initial healing stage of a tattoo: a film that acts as a second skin' to protect tattoo wounds from germs and bacteria and at the same time, is permeable allowing the skin to 'breathe'. The film assists the skin to heal naturally from the inside out, by locking in the body's natural fluids and enzymes, which guarantees beautifully healed tattoos. Leave this film on for at least 1 week. When showering cover the film temporally with cling film to protect the second skin from water, this will help with the longevity of the film. after your shower make sure to remove the cling film.
2. Removing your Second Skin.
Once you remove the film, wash your tattoo gently with lukewarm water and a mild, unscented soap.
Use your hands (not a washcloth) to clean the area. Avoid scrubbing.
Pat the tattoo dry with a clean, soft towel or let it air dry. Do NOT rub the tattoo.
3. Apply a Thin Layer of Aftercare Ointment
Once the tattoo is dry, apply a thin layer of unscented, tattoo-specific aftercare ointment. palmers coco butter is wildly available.
Do NOT over-apply; a small amount is sufficient to keep the area moisturized. The goal is to prevent the tattoo from drying out, but it should still breathe. We do NOT recommend the usage of Savalon, Bepanthen or Sudocreme.
4. Keep Your Tattoo Clean and Dry
Continue moisturizing your tattoo at least 3 - 4 times a day for 2 - 3 weeks after your tattoo.
Avoid soaking your tattoo in water (no swimming, hot tubs, or long baths) for at least 2 weeks.
5. Avoid Sun Exposure
Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight for at least 2 to 3 weeks.
After it has healed, always apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to protect the tattoo from UV rays, which can cause fading.
6. Do Not Pick or Scratch
As your tattoo heals, it may scab or peel. This is normal. Picking can damage the tattoo and lead to scarring or loss of colour.
If your tattoo feels itchy, gently tap it or apply more lotion to soothe the area.
7. Wear Loose Clothing
Wear loose clothing over your tattoo to avoid friction and irritation, especially during the first few days of healing.
8. Avoid Excessive Movement
Try to avoid strenuous exercise or activities that cause excessive sweating for the first few days. Sweat can irritate the tattoo and slow down the healing process.
9. Monitor for Signs of Infection
Watch for signs of infection, such as excessive redness, swelling, warmth, pus, or a fever. If you notice any of these, contact your tattoo artist or a healthcare professional immediately.
10. Healing Time
The surface of the tattoo may heal in 1 to 2 weeks, but it can take up to 6 weeks for the deeper layers of skin to fully heal.
Even after the surface appears healed, continue moisturizing your tattoo to keep it looking fresh.
11. Enjoy your new tattoo!
